I have heard of come backers who have a double C after 5 months. I have heard that they progress more rapidly than in college. Has anyone else experienced this?
When I came back to playing trumpet, I found myself going for range at the expense of other (neccesary) skills. So, yeah, I could play a double C in a passage or at the end of a tune, but could I play a nice largo passage in tune with a beautiful sound? No. Did I have a nice open sounding low register? No, I was rather stuffy down there. I did myself a favor and quit working so much on range. It was hard because it's such an ego trip to play double C and beyond after all these years, a 25 year layoff. But I now work on intonation, tone, and interpretation. And, yes, I have a long way to go, but I get more work on the trumpet now that I have a more versatile sound. My advice, for what it's worth, is: Forget the ego-stroking effects of range and go in there and play music.

I agree with the above...of course we get a little blown a way with a guy who screams his you know what off...but honestly that will never touch someone in the same life changing way that Lee Morgan, Roy Hargrove, or Claudio Roditi do with their PHfaatt, syrupy, dark, beautiful sounds...sound is the ONLY thing that should be on your mind.... _________________ Make Music!

I came back a few years ago after a 10+ year break I had a range of about Bb above the staff. After working out of BE and doing my own exercises(pedals, lip slurs, breathing) I could hold out with good tone a nice A over high G. In college, however, I could hit a double C so I wasn't really coming from nowhere. My advice to you is to just work on tone and the range will come over time. You could also look at BE, they helped me fix a lot of problems I had. Chris
