I tried out a few flugels this weekend. Here's my story and question:I liked the Yamaha 731 in terms of intonation. Didn't played a Couesnon, but I like the thought of buying one. They are the standard (I've heard them called the flugelhorn King), but I hear they often are not too great in the intonation dept. I tried a nice Benge, but was really surprised with a few out oftune notes.
Is there a characteristic common to the horns that "in tune"?…or something common of those out-of-tune. Anybody have thoughts on the bore size and its effect on intonation? Lacquer vs. silver, gold, or raw?
The best flugel out there for my money is the Kanstul 1525. I play one, and so do Doc and Arturo!
Arturo Sandoval has my favorite flugal tone, and I was able to come close when I changed over to the Kanstul 1525. In many cases it is the player, but in this case the horn deserves a lot of credit. _________________ "To be a teacher you need to be as good a performer as you can be: you'll have more to impart to your students musically." - John Haynie

The Eclipse is by far the best flugel on the market by now. BUT, the industry standard in my opinion is the Kanstul 1525 it is very dark, fluffy, and plays well in tune and doesnt back up on you like many flugels do....The second is probably the Courtois or the Leblancs and the couesnon's all though have great sounds are just dang near impossible to play in tune. _________________ Make Music!

There are a lot of players who vouch for the Hub Van Laar flugels. Anyone here have experience with those?
