I started playing the drum when I was four years old. By the time
I was in the fifth grade, they gave me a new uniform and put me
in the high school band. That was in 1944----I played percussion
until I was a sophomore, and I could see at the end of the year
that we were losing the good players out of the trumpet section,
so I got two guys in the band to say they would switch to the
trumpet, but two of them chickened out. A neighbor gave me
a Conn Wonder model cornet that belonged to her grandfather,
who played in the town band where she lived. I asked our band
director for a good book to learn to play the trumpet with, and
he got me an Arban Clarke book, retail price, $5.00----I took the
cornet, went out in the back yard and taught myself how to play.
When I went back in the fall, we had tryouts, and I made first
chair. I played cornet for two years, took the thing to college with
me to major in music. I was loaned an ROTC trumpet and played
it until I had enough money to buy a Benge.
I got my degree in public school music, taught for 31 years
and retired, and I now play lead trumpet in a ten piece jazz band
that has been playing together at an irish pub here in Chillicothe
Ohio for 33 years. We play each Thursday night and play gigs
outside the club several times a year. I am currently playing a
Lawler balanced model trumpet, which I like very much. This is
my second Lawler horn----the first I traded in on the balanced
one. I am 72 years old but still can play a few licks Smile I think I will
like your forum---
