How about Al "Jumbo" Hirt who was hit in the mouth by a brick while riding on a Mardi Gras float in New Orleans in 1970. Two years after reconstructive lip surgery he made a comeback and played for another 18 years until his death in 1990.
That was one of the greatest comebacks of all time! _________________ "To be a teacher you need to be as good a performer as you can be: you'll have more to impart to your students musically." - John Haynie

In the case of Raphael Mendez, he got hit in the bell of his trumpet while playing it . Someone slammed a door open right into his horn doing severe damage to his lips and teeth. He came back for several years. His next embeshure accident was when a baseball bat was thrown by a ball player in Mexico, again striking him in the mouth. In his comeback he taught himself to play with virtually no mouthpiece pressure on his lips. He then went on to play concert tours for another 15 years.
