Hi, has anyone experience or does know something about the Schilke P4, which is the 3-valve piccolo? In particular I would be interested to know how people cope with the fact that the low 1-4 combination is not possible. Does one use 1-2-3 then, together
with the 3rd tuning slide pulled out?
I've got a P7 Schilke. It is a 3 valve picc. The original bore is .437 on this model but they've been using the P5-4 .450 on it. Mine is a new one..so, the larger bore. The bell appears slightly different from the P5-4. The intonation is much better, as is the slotting compared to the 4 banger. I don't miss the 4th valve. You don't need the 4th for false fingerings, cuz it's 3rd slide works great for D's and C#'s.
You can play the low F with the 3rd slide extended.
I heard that Schilke was messing around with a rotor for this horn (like the Yamaha 9820C, but was less than satisfied with it)
The P7 is a much more playable horn compared to the P5-4....and not quite as bright.
