modern as in three piston valves (or roataries in central europe)?
roughly around the mid 1800s. by the civil war, confederate & union bands used mostly rotary-valve, over-the-shoulder brass.

during the earlier time of joseph haydn, some builders experimented with keyed trumpets/bugles.

by the time jb arban wrote his conservatory method, piston valve cornets were in use.
