i don't know if they were considered pro, but i think king silver sonics sounded super & played better than silver flairs. lots of folks sure liked that flair, though.
I'm going to ask an obvious question -- if these horns were great, then why did they stop making them?
The success of Bach is the Strad. They have made varaitions, but never turned away from the horn that built their company. So if King actually had horns that were great in the past, why did they turn away?
I liked the King Silver Flair, but I would not have traded it for my Bach, but many of my freinds would have kept the King over the Bach. The pre UMI Silver Flairs wre considered at the time Kings top of the line horn. Anything pre 68-70 when the horns were still made in Eastlake NJ are excellent horns. Very fast and quiet valves. You can pick up a used Flair of this vintage, in very good condition for under $500.00. An excellent value as long as it is pre UMI. King was in Eastlake, Ohio starting in 1964-65, and UMI was not formed until 1985. would say the window of pre-UMI Kings is larger than 1968-68 (70). The Eastlake horns were of great quality and the first "King" instruments did not appear unti 1966. I have never tried a King horn from after 1970 but I have heard that although the factory had not moved yet that the quality started to suffer in the mid 70's.
