I'm going to answer this as a teacher -- CONCERT!!!
I love to teach concert band, and it is the one I teach the very best. When I was in high school I loved jazz band, but concert was my favorite then. I also loved the orchestra, and the youth orchestras I played with.
To be very honest my favorite now is to play by myself. I love playing the old baroque solo pieces with organ. When playing solo the only limitation is the skill level of me and my wife (she accompanies me 90% of the time.) She's better than I am so the music selection is pretty much up to me. _________________ "To be a teacher you need to be as good a performer as you can be: you'll have more to impart to your students musically." - John Haynie
Whaen I was in high school Jazz Band was my favorite. I also loved Concert band when we had good songs to play...since that was rare I liked Jazz band more.

My very favorite in high school and college was a polka band that I played in, closely followed by concert band and concert orchestra. i didn't appreciate the potential hazard to our instruments that one of our band teachers demanded by his selection of on field maneuvers he wanted us to do. He demanded that we whip our instruments arround so violently, (checking and reviewing our performance with a movie camera), that many of the instruments came apart at the solder joints, simply from the inertial stress that they were subjected to. I thought of myself as a musician, not a field gymnast. I refused to perform in his marching band and organised a pep band that played at all of the basketball and football games for our school from then on, in place of his big marching band.
This is NOT to say that I do not enjoy marching in a parade. Heck, I still enjoy hearing a good rousing march played by some good band as they come down the street in a parade.
I guess that my complaint with 'MARCHING BAND' is not the marching. It is the ridiculous manuevers that we were made to do on the football field.
When I was in high school, we did not have a jazz band. What we had was the advanced band that did Marching and Concert.. If you were an advanced student this is what you did
I always liked the marching part because we performed every friday night at the football games. It was fun putting together a new show every week.
But, my favorite was concert season. This is when we performed the most difficult music. It made me work harder and I felt more satisfaction. _________________ Harry Marks
I love marching band and DCI. If you ever get a chance, go see a DCI show....it will be well worth your time! I went to one of the audition camps for Santa Clara Vanguard, and the sound of all those great brass players is just awesome!
