I would like to expand the question a little as to how to read changes? I am new to improv. and am having difficluty in reading the chords. Is there a book or something that lays out the various chords and their variations? Also, are changes in concert pitch or written pitch?

There is a book called Jazz Improvisation I'll have to check the author for you. You shoul check to see if your local library has,that's where I got mine.
