OK, here is a hypothetical question: Could you take an Olds Ambassaor cornet with a bore of .468 and make a large bore Olds trumpet out of it using other Olds/Reynolds parts, ala the conversion done on Dave's Bach Trumpet Page (www.electrotheremin.com/bach.html)?
For all those who would say "why?", there is no reason that will satisfy other than just to see if it can be done. It is truly a gearhead exercise, but I wanted to see if anyone who knows Ambassadors can think of a problem big enough to scupper the project. I have done some preliminary measuring and it seems like it would work.
That would be very interesting to see and I believe it could be done. I'll let some of the more experienced players give their opinions though since I'm know virtually nothing about building trumpets. Good luck though.
Thanks! I thought that given the popularity of the Ambassadors this might be a neat project. This may end up being an academic exercise, but since they are so plentiful it might be fun to play around with.
I spoke with Clay at Centex Brass to see if he thought it feasible, and his concern is the fact that a cornet's tubing is continually (sort of) getting larger, so where does it stobecomes the question.
Well, I found out this won't work. The trumpet and cornet are too disimilar in height at the valve cluster. In addition, the curve of the bell tube and leadpipe/tuning slide are also very different. I guess the only way to make this kind of hybrid is to use Bach horns! I don't think I am going to be cutting up my Strad anytime soon, but my hat is off to Dave for making it work.
