If you've booked a gig and you'll be playing pretty soon but don't know what you'll be playing I'm not sure if wishing you luck will be enough. Hmmmmmmm...... Instead I'll say a prayer for you! Seems fitting considering the topic!

I have played in a church orchestra and as accompanist for the song service on many occasions. In an orchestra to be totally familiar with and well prepared with the rest of the orchestra is an imperitive. To play along with the song service requires that a trumpeter be prepared to play whatever the song leader decides to have the congregation to sing. In a song service setting the accompanists also must be familiar with the music involved, BUT, the congregation,( audience ) is also singing along, which releives the instrumentalists of the same degree of perfection in ensemble sound that they have to display in a strictly orchestral setting, because the congregation is also performing as a sort of choir. This entails their concentration on what they are singing to detract from their concentration on the perfection of the instrumentalists.

I have been invited to play lead trumpet at a large evangelical church in this area at a 'hymn sing' this coming Sunday. Being more than familiar with whatever the song leader might select from the hymn book will be an easy one for me, but, for some of the other instrumentalists it will be a problem, because they,( in many cases ) are not as familiar with the majority of the hymns in the book. I look forward to leading this 'pickup' band or orchestra in praising God by "making a joyful noise unto the Lord". As Bandman said, he will pray for Son of Sam. I hope that he does the same for me.

HAHAHA! Well it's not a gig just a performance in my church group sometime around Easter. What we're playing is still undecided. Any suggestions?
