Any experience with it? Why are they generally cheaper than Bach Strad trumpets and why don't they hold their value as well?

I think that the major reason for the valuation difference is that many school band instructors are showing a preference for trumpets over cornets, thus, decreasing the potential market for cornets. I, personally disagree with this, but, I am just an old man whose opinions are rarely heeded on a national basis. I play a cornet most of the time by preference in both of the concert bands that I play in.

There is a rather fiery thread over on either TH or TM about this very topic. It came about after Leigh announced that Eclipse was about to start selling their new cornet.

As an old traditionalist I still think cornet means cornet when the composer writes cornet. There was a specific sound that people like Grainger were trying to achieve when they wrote parts for both trumpet and cornet in the same ensemble. There once was a time when they also wrote parts for flugelhorn in the concert band.

I wish that I could get into a group where there were 9 cornets and 4 trumpets, and some of the trumpets also played flugelhorn. It would be nice to play in an ensemble where the traditions of the old masters were still followed in much the same fashion as they are followed in the orchestral world.

I own a Bach Strad shepherds crook model 184 large bore and use it in the brass band I play for at the present time. I prefer it to the Besson offered to me by the band. I use a Denis Wick 2 which provides a lovely fat sound. I certainly don't stand out against the rest of the cornet section who use Besson. I imagine I would if I used a Bach mpc though....I own a 1 1/2C and a 1 1/2C megatone which gives the instrument a very powerful bright sound. I have no problem with a Bach cornet.
