best trumpeter of all timeI think that I have to go with Raphael Mendez, closely followed by Maurice Andre, Herbert Clark,Sergei Nakariakov, Del Steiger, and a host of British cornetists from a way back in history.

Wait wait, I take that back. I forgot about Sergei Nakariakov. For being so young and so darn good. How old is the guy now, mid to late 20s?

Here are my lists, not my greatest player. I don’t think you can say just one. I listed people who had, or are having, a great influence on my life. Some of them you have heard of, and some maybe you haven’t, but in one way or another they have shaped the way I think about playing the trumpet
Maurice Andre
Wayne Bergeron
Bill Chase
Gary Dobbins
Jon Faddis
Maynard Ferguson
Armando Ghitalla
Bud Herseth
Arturo Sandoval
Adel Sanchez
Gerard Schwarz
Doc Severinson
Edward Tarr
Roger Voisin
John Wright
As a teacher I wanted to include these 4 gentleman because of their great influence not only on me, but also on my teachers.
Vincent Cichowicz
Gary Dobbins
John Haynie
John Wright
I also would want to recognize the some men changed, or who I think are still trying to change, the way that we make trumpets. As a player I own, or have owned, instruments made by these men in my quest to find the perfect trumpet.
Vincent Bach
Jerome Callet
Jason Harrelson
Zig Kanstul
Reynold Schilke
And some day I will own a horn made by Leigh McKinney. I consider him and Jason Harrelson to be perhaps the two greatest trumpet designers of all time.

Timofei Dokshizer
Maurice Andre
Sergei Nakariakov
Guy Touvron
Haken Hardenberger
Maybe not everyones choice but certainly the players that made me sit up and say " I'd like to sound like that"

Wynton Marsalis is my hero. Check him out on Carnival of Venice! It's incredible.

I agree with the above post. Hopefully there are no Wynton bashers on this site.

Hey Lou,
Who is Del Steiger? That's a name I don't know.

I won't bash anyone who is a better player than I'll ever be, but I'm not a Wynton fan. I really like his father and brother, but I do not think that Wynton has done all that he could do to promote music. I have always found him to be looking out for himself more than he looks out for music in general.
His father is a wonderful man who has gone out of his way to promote music and music education. Being from Louisiana I'll go to my grave loving Ellis forall he has done for the young people of our state.

My initial reaction is that there is no 1 player who is the best of all times. My reasoning is that there are too many type of players to make such a broad selection.
Here are some of the categories I a thinking about:
Orchestral
Jazz
Classical Soloist
Big Band Lead
Studio
Brass Quintet
Brass Band
Brass Ensemble
Wind Ensenble
This is by no means an exhaustive list. As you can see no one player would fit into each of these catetories and be the best.
As for chosing a favorite, I would have different people for different categories. There may be some that fit into several categories.
My personal favorites are:
Philip Smith
Adolph Herseth
Alan Vizzutti
Ray Mase
Chris Gekker
Raphael Mendez
Doc Severinsen
Sergei Nakaraikov

Who is Del Staiger?Del Staiger was one of the finest cornetists in history. He was principal cornetist in J.P.Sousa's band for many years and left to work in Hollywood as a studio trumpeter. He was known as the absolute master of the lip slur. His intro to The Carnival of Venice was beyond belief.
As a young child my dad and grandfather took me with them all of the way from Grand Rapids, Mi. to Elkhart, In. to hear this fine cornetist. I had just started learning to play the cornet and was much inspired by that old mans ability.
