Brass Bands

Anybody have any experience with Brass Bands? I'm thinking abnout joining this local one that plays dirges(sp?) I think. Any experience or tips? Also can I play trumpet in them or would I need a cornet?

I play in a British brass band and believe me when I say that the music is far from dirge like unless your conductor likes that sort of music. However it can be repetitive and time consuming particularly when building up to a contest as we are doing at the present time http://www.pontins.com/brassbands/2005championships/index.htm There is some fantastic music written for brass bands particularly by Philip Sparke http://www.philipsparke.com/ and Edward Gregson http://www.edwardgregson.com/ Just listen to some playing of contest tst pieces by Buy As You View band here http://www.buyasyouviewcoryband.co.uk/CD/default.asp just click on the test pieces to sample some of the playing. Dirges...no way  By the way trumpets are not used in a true Brit brass band and the Central Band of Florida didn't use them when they performed at the British Open in September. Hope this helps
