Horns for less than a grand...I can help! If you are looking to spend less than a thousand I have the hook up to several horns that would be solid buys...I also have a friend selling a Callet Soloist which is a GREAT horn that he would let go for an even 1000!

eBay frequently has gently used/like new pro horns for sale around $800 - 1000 if you are patient. I have a preferrence for Conn's and have seen several Vintage One's go at that price. Always a risk of course to "buy before you play" but given the general consistency of the name brand pro horns and some diligence such as asking the right questions and checking feedback ratings I've had good success on eBay over the years with both percussion and trumpets/cornets. You may want to consider a Conn Connstellation. They are in the $300-500 range. Usually need a chem clean and new springs and pads but for another $100 to get this done you have a great horn. (I recentlly got a Connstellation Cornet for $250 which my local music store cleaned and repaded for $60. Valves still have very good compression.) Enough about Conn. Less frequently I seen Xeno's and Bach's sell for around $1000. Again check the feedback comments from other buyers and don't be bashful about asking the seller questions.

At soaaa.org they have Yamaha Xenos for $995 including shipping. They are only 3 months old and in mint condition. They come with a double trumpetcase, and a gold-rimmed mouthpiece. PM or email me for any more info.

O. By the way..the Callet offer above looks good. Callet trumpet are handmade and hand tuned. They even use a process that removes excess solder from inside the horn. State of the art...

You could go with a Bach TR200. I know that this isn't a pro horn but I have one, and it has excellent valves. Also, when you don't push the horn it sounds nice mellow. But when pushed the horn will go over to the bright side pretty easily.
trumpetistically,

tr200A repair tech friend of mine told me that the bach student line horns have the same valves as the strad horns but they usually are not hand lapped with the same amount of care...if they dont work as smoothly as you wish send them to a reputable tech or google the Valve DR.

For me the valves on my TR200 have always worked better than the valves on my Strad.
