horn modificationI am thinking about getting a few old beater horns and making myself an odd kind of trumpet. What methods would I use for pieceing together the parts? Solder? Torch? Duct tape? (jk) Any advise or past experiences would be appreciated.

I've been doing a bit of that myself. What you would use is a brazer. It's basically a welder but at a lower temperature and it melts brass. Good Luck.

Chris,
What kind of modification are you doing? What I want to attempt is to make my own Firebird. Or a C/Bb with a switch to change it back and forth between them. Or maybe a D with interchangable leadpipes and slides for switching to C and Bb. So many ideas...

I made my own herald trumpet, and have been thinking of making a soprano trombone. To convert a Bb to C:
All slides, and potentially the bell, will need to be shortened slightly to get it in tune. The Bb bell will emphasize the wrong resonance series, but that probably won't matter. Once you get the leadpipe and slides cut to size, you might have a horn worth experimenting on...
Doing it probably isn't all that hard, but doing it well may be...
