Introduce yourself

Hi:
I am returning to horn playing after an absence of 47 years. I always said Iwas going to but this year as I approached 64 ithought better now or I never will. Never doing things halfway and being a little obsessive i have purchased four horns on E-bay. None in great shape but the Olds ambassador only needs the spit valve solodered back on. I will do that after the Holton from 1911 comes back from the repair shop. I have rebuild kit coming for the other holoton from 1948 that need s new corks. The fourth cornet is on its way and is an Olds Studio model with the trigger on the number one valve. As to playing I have been practicing 1 to 1.5 hours a day. I am surprised because I get better each day.

as to the rest of my life: retired Navy after 28 years, graduated college with a B.S. degree in painting, printmaking and Photography in 1995.. I have a 540 Sq ft store front where I paint work on fountain pens mostly vintage practice the cornet and sell pens and my paintings. Tuesday thriugh Thursday I clean pools to help pay for everything else I do.I am married to Barbara and this year we will celebrate the 27th anniversery of our Marriage.
One thing I am lousy at is spelling so please forgive. I use speell checker where available. I belong to several other lists or forrums most to do with Pens but als moniter the one for Sherline Lathes and Mills. Hope to interact and learn on this site.

Welcome Ron.

I too am retired navy (26 years). I retired in 1993 and picked up the horn a year later. It has been a great time. The best thing I ever did was to get a private teacher a couple years ago.

The state of trumpet learning knowledge has grown a lot since I quit in 1974. It really helps to have a teacher who knows the various techniques that can be applied to learning.

Good luck in you comeback.

Thanks Harry. Nice to meet another sailor. I hae been thinking about lessons also. Have to wait till I tell my wife about the horn playing. I want to tell her when I can surprise her by playing something nice for her. I am totally surprised how much better I get each week. I figured the struggle to get to where I was 47 years ago would be monumentle. Just recieves the Olds studio yesterday seems to be in great shape needas some cleaning and the silver needs polishing. Also have to find out what the trigger on the first vale is used for.
Have a great week. Ron Meloche

The trigger on the first valve as well as the ring on the 3rd valve will help you play the low d and c# in tune. They are notoriously sharp.

As you get better and start playing with others, you will want to adjust your intonation to match the others. The main tuning slide will only get you in the ball park on open tones.

I worked on my own comeback for 8 years after I retired and got nowhere. Thanks to a great teacher I have made enough progress that I am now playing in two orchestras and a concert band.

My wife has supported me all the way. I guess after 38 years you is willing to put up with my practice so long as I get out of the house for rehearsals.

Thanks Harry:
I guess then that would be one of the differences between a pro horn and a cheap horn. The slides on a cheap horn are harder to slide in and out. On the olds studio they slide very easily. Still on the look out for an Olds recording or Mendez cornet. Do not quite kbow why but in anything I have ever done I always like the best equipment I can afford. I have an early 1912 Holton in for some work on the solder joints have to see how it sounds once I get it back. By the way they are all cornets. Have a great week end.
