Pawn shop deals

I once picked up a 37 Bach Strad at a pawn shop for $100. I got it cleaned and a few dents removed for $25 and it was great, one of my old back up horns. But for $125....Whew! Any of you had any experience with finding deals on trumpets at pawn shops, garage sales, thrift stores etc.? Chris

I am good at finding deals on trumpets. I often visit yard sales, and estate sales to find them. I have found a Mt. Vernon at a yard sale for $50 that needed only minor repairs,Olds Mendez for $50, a Yamaha 2320 for $10 at a yard sale, Strad 37 for $40 at an estates sale, and a Schilke 4 valve pic for $30 at the same estates sale. I have sold all for at different times for much more than what I paid.

I haven't had any real luck with horns at yard sales. My dad found my beginner Holton at a yard sale for I think 50 or 60 dollars. I think it is a pretty good buy for that much money, it is in very good condition.

flea market buy

This was not a pawn shop deal, rather, a, flea market. No I did not come home with fleas. I came home with another Couturier trumpet with a cornet leadpipe and receiver, gold plating over the most engraving I have ever seen on a trumpet/cornet and engraving of the quality found usually only on King sterling silver bells, except that this goes all the way round the bell. It came in the original factory case and two accessory main tuning slides and a Couturier mouthpiece. When I asked the vendor if he had any brass musical instruments, he just pointed at this old case off to one side, not even on one of his tables, just laying in the dirt. I just about wet my pants when I opened the case and saw the old gold plated horn inside. When I got it home I stripped it and soaked it in the bathtub in dish washing liquid and warm water for a couple of hours. When I ran the flexible cable brush through it the gunk just poured out. When it was clean, I discovered that the rotary valve quick change to 'A' was leaking. A proper packing with heavy wheel bearing grease cured that. It plays as well as any horn I have ever tried. I think that I got lucky.
