Starting a Student off right

Any suggestions for starting a beginner student on the right path? What I mean by that is starting them off so they don't pick up bad habits and work on the fundamentals instead of useless practicing. Any suggestions?

Just make sure that you introduce them to a fixed schedule or practice routine. If they have that, they'll be ahead of the game.

For a beginner the quality of practice is more important than the quantity of practice. Tell them exactly what you want them to work on, and the idea is to practice that until it is correct and can be done with relative ease.

If you can, check them as often as possible. I have certain students that I ask to come in at lunch once or twice a week for about 2-5 minutes of playing for me. At the beginnger level it is amazing what you can learn about their progress in less than 5 minutes.
