Can anybody out there recommend a silencing device/technique that I can employ, so I can play me little heart out without annoying the neighbours? Most of my neighbours are understanding, and don't mind me tooting away for an hour or two. Some even call round with requests! But a guy recently moved in next door who is objectionable to say the least, and has been increasingly abusive towards me whenever I play. The last straw came a few nights ago when, halfway through the Dexy's Midnight Runners classic 'Geno', he kicked my front door in threatening to stab my face off if he heard one more note out of "that f***ing trombone" (it's a trumpet, what a dork!). Obviously I was badly shaken, it's rumoured that my lovely 'neighbour' has just been released from prison for kicking a sheep to death at a village fete, so you'll know the kind of guy I'm dealing with.

Proceedings have started to evict this maniac, but until then I'm gonna need some way of decreasing the volume (and increasing my life expectancy!). It'd tear me apart not to be able to play, someone please HELP!

There are several very good practice mutes on the market. They range in price from $200 US to $20 US.

The best I have found for the money is the Brass Spa practice mute. It is the cheapest I know of and can be purchased at www.brassspa.com.

From the sound of your post I would guess that you are not in the US so I would look for dealers in your area.

As for the jerk, you should file a police report for tresspassing and assault. I would guess that by kicking in your door, he violated any rental agreement he has with the apt manager.

Whenever I travel, I take both my Yamaha Silent Brass and Brass Spa practice mutes with me. I practice in my hotel room and have never had a complaint.
