jazz setupMuch of the selection of instrument will be determined by the size and ambiance of the room in which the performance is to be. In smaller rooms,( more intimate ), a cornet with a soft sweet tone is preferred. In a large auditorium a medium or big bore trumpet is needed for projection to the far corners of the hall. This is why most jazz cornetists/ trumpeters practice with and use more than one horn. In addition, some numbers require that the player wail, while other numbers want the subtle tone of a cornet. Mouthpiece selection for various uses are also to be considered.
The number of other instruments in the ensemble and the volume at which they play is a factor.
I carry a medium bore trumpet,( a vintage Couturier ), with a rather shallow cup mouthpiece for large halls and an early 1934 Martin Imperial Handcrafted extended cornet with a rather deep cup mouthpiece with me to most jobs.
