I am a comebacker with a couple of questions.... I learned to play trumpet on a Bach 5C mouthpiece. After several years I tried a Bach 3C Megatone and it felt much more comfortable and I could play louder, longer and higher with much more ease. My instructors wanted me to stick to the regular 5C. Is there a way to know what is the correct mouthpiece for you? What is the correct way to choose one?
I am now a comebacker after a 10 year hiatus and still like the feel of the 3C Megatone better. Am I cheating by using it?
There is no such thing as cheating. The selection of a mouthpiece is just as personal as a toothbrush. You choose what works for your.
If your teacher wants you to change he/she should have a reason. Is it for sound, endurance, size or what? Discuss it, then make the change if necessary.
I have made several change over the past 2 years and it was always with a goal in mind.
I now play on the equivalet of a 1.25c with a 22 throat and a 24 backbore. All this to open up the sound and to make my attacks more positive.
