1) Most of us on this forum have been playing trumpet longer than you have been alive.
2) No matter how good you think you are, there's always somebody better, so no boasting please.
3) No matter how smart you think you are, there's always somebody smarter, let them answer the questions.
4) True wisdom comes from listening more than speaking.
5) If you think a new horn will make you play a) higher, b) louder, c) brighter, d) darker, e) like someone famous, f) sexier, etc. , well, no, it won't, only proper practice will.
6) If you think you need to talk your parents into buying you a $2000 trumpet don't ask us which one to buy.
7) If you think you need to talk your parents into buying you a $2000 trumpet - save it. Their money would be much better spent on private lessons. If you already take lessons spend the money on a music library, concerts or clinics.
8) The person playing the trumpet makes the music sound pleasant, not the brand name on the bell.
9) Great trumpets are made one at a time in small quantities by great craftsmen, not mass produced in large quantities by large corporations.
10) Spending an hour arguing about anything on this forum will never be more productive than spending an hour practicing.

Beginners, I've been teaching for 27-years and would love to discuss anything with you that you feel would make you a better player. Ask me anything and I'll give you the benefit of my experience as a band director to help you.
If you want to know about a new horn, or if something you were told at school is true, then ask. In music we learn from the experiences of others, and the only stupid question is the one you failed to ask.
Congratulations on your desire to be a fine musician, and if I can help you in any way, please let me know!!

Longevity does not make a trumpet player good. I’ve probably been alive longer than you, but that means nothing. I have some students still in high school that are very fine players. I would have no problem recommending them over some old guys for jobs.

Not a true statement. If you found the very finest player in the world, then this statement would be false. There is someone better than everyone except for the one person who is really the best.

True wisdom comes only when you have the ability to take the knowledge you have acquired and then you are able to apply it to real life.

Then why do we buy new horns??? I like answers a,b,c, and d. Proper practice doesn’t hurt either.

So why is there a horns forum? I thought it was for those of us who have been playing for many years, and have played almost every model from every brand, to share our experiences with those who are looking for a new horn.

So when do they buy a new horn?

You are correct sir!!!

I don’t agree with this in principal. I consider Yamaha and Bach and some others to be made in large quantities, and I consider many of the horns that have come from those companies to be pretty darn good horns!

That ruins all the fun of having a forum like this. _________________ "To be a teacher you need to be as good a performer as you can be: you'll have more to impart to your students musically." - John Haynie
Thanks SOS, I was just feeling a bit silly (hence my smart/silly replies), but at the same time I wanted to let beginners know it is always okay to ask questions. I've heard some questions in my career that sounded pretty stupid to a person who had been playing for over 35 years, but I've learned to hear the questions the way that the younger players intended them to sound. What is obvious to us is a serious question to a beginner. We owe it to our future trumpet players (and other young musicians) to give them the same courtesy as someone gave us when we were young.
27-years of teaching beginners has been tough on the ears at times, but it has been very good for my heart. I love young players and I get great satisfaction in seeing them grow up to be accomplished musicians. _________________ "To be a teacher you need to be as good a performer as you can be: you'll have more to impart to your students musically." - John Haynie
Hey yamahadude. Once upon a time there was a guy on TM (and judging by your signature that was you) who posted somthing similar to this and wound up sparking a huge controversy where everyone ended up arguing and hating each other so word to the wise...dont be so harsh to the begginers (unless you want a similar reaction), they have a right to be here just like us. _________________ "A good composer does not imitate; he steals." -Igor Stravinsky

Inasmuch as I am glad to see 'some' disagreement posted here, I am very hopeful that no ire is arroused. Hateful postings will destroy this forum which many of us have carefully assembled thus far.

UHH, then why isn't your name "Lawlerdude", "Taylordude",or something like that? _________________ Stacy Williams

Hey do you know a good trumpet that I can get between 800 and 1400 dollars? I want it to be new. I wanted a bach but my band director said maybe I should get a blessing. Can you please help me! I have been plaing for 4 years in a small band. I guess I am ok. I have been to a few honor bands, would like to go to a solo ensemble someday. I have a beginner King which was like 500 bucks. What is a good pro trumpet that has a good price. PLEASE HELP ME!
I suggest you contact JIm Fox at http://www.ibowtie.com/ and inquire about the Kanstul Proline instruments. Fine instruments at a very fair price.
I would also suggest you consider a used trumpet. My Bach Strad is 48 years old and is better than anything Bach Dreams about producing now days. I'd never sell it for any price, but you can pick up used Bach Strads on Ebay for the $1000 price range.
Your price range is pretty low, but if you are careful you can get a very nice used proline horn with the amount of money you want to spend,
