I am going to on vacation at the end of June 2006 with my wife and 5 kids, so there are a total of 7 ticketed people. We play trumpet and saxaphone and I am bringing two alto saxophones and a trumpet. I want to bring the instruments as carry-on.
It is my understanding that there is a letter to the musician's union from the U.S. FAA administrator that states that musical instruments are allowed (on US flights) as carry-on. But does this work in practice? How do you guys travel with your horns?

I just came back from a vacation in England. On our flight from Newark, N.J. to Birmingham England there was a professional trombonist who was carrying his horn in a soft case. He had flown from Florida to N.J. with it as well. He VERY carefully placed his horn in the overhead luggage bin and had no problem. In talking with him I was told that he flies quite often carrying his horn to various gigs.
